Heavy losses among convincing wins for Spalding Men’s teams

It was a mixed bag for Spalding Men’s hockey teams at the weekend with a hammering for the first and fourth teams, while the seconds and thirds pulled off excellent wins.
Ipswich Men’s 1st 6
Spalding Men’s 1st 0

The game started quickly with Ipswich testing the travelling side early on, but Spalding stood strong and repelled the attacks, even making moves forward themselves, pulling the keeper into making some good saves and having a goal chalked off for being outside of the circle.
Ipswich continued their attacks scoring two goals in quick succession. Spalding bounced back with good spells of possession however, with some good defence work and good breaks, Ipswich went on to score two more.
A strong defensive showing from Spalding in the second half made it hard work for the Ipswich strikers to break through, and this showed as, in exchange, Spalding started to apply sustained pressure against Ipswich.
However, in the final few minutes Ipswich took control and scored two more goals.

St Ives 3rd 3

Goals: Darren Grooby (2), Aaron Scholes, Sean Cave, Steve Rogers, Jacob Drew
Despite finding themselves 3-1 down in the first half, Spalding regrouped to take a 4-3 lead into the break. Controlled play in midfield from a returning Josh Rowbottom and newcomer Sean Cave allowed the team to create attacking chances and pull away in the second half.
qSpalding Men’s 3rd 9
City of Peterborough 6th 1
Goals: Glenn Richardson (4), Charlie Smith (3), Graeme Matthews, Arron Borst
On an overcast afternoon at Surfleet, Spalding took on Peterborough 6th.
Spalding were quick out of the blocks with four goals in the first 15 minutes, one from Matthews to start the scoring followed by a quick-fire hat-trick by Richardson.
Spalding continued to pile on the misery with a fifth goal from Borst.
In the second half, Spalding continued their dominance with multiple chances before Richardson was able to get his fourth.
Charlie Smith made full use of some great counter-attacking hockey to bag himself a hat-trick to bring the full-time score to 9-1.
Wisbech Town 4th 8
Spalding Men’s 4th 0

Despite some excellent defensive work by Marco Mendoza and battling play by Thomas Sutcliffe, the goals flowed for the home team giving them a 4-0 lead at half time.
The fifth followed within minutes of the restart with three more coming before Spalding finally created a chance of their own.
