Hat-trick hero Cawthorn piles praise on seven-up Long Sutton Athletic

Player/boss Matt Cawthorn toasted one of Long Suton Athletic’s best results of the season so far on Saturday.

The Magpies smashed Netherton United Reserves 7-0 at London Road in ChromaSport PDFL Division One – meaning they have now beaten them three times already this season.

Sutton went ahead when Billy Radeloff’s cross was flicked on by Billy Oliver for Cawthorn to volley home.

The second was a comical own goal, scored after both Cawthorn and Oliver had hit the bar, before the player/boss buried a penalty to make it 3-0 at half time.

Four more goals came after the break, the first of which being Cawthorn’s 22nd of the season and hat-trick strike on the hour.

Kev Gould then came on after a lengthy lay-off and grabbed a double, before Mark Garner’s clever finish rounded off the rout.

Cawthorn said: “Special mention goes to the midfield who create so many chances for us boys up top. Matty Oliver never stops running, and probably doesn’t get the rewards his workrate shows, the same with Sam Moses. They both work tirelessly.

“It was a very pleasing result and performance, but I was a little disappointed at half time, as I thought we were getting dragged into a niggly battle which we didn’t need to.

I wanted to keep all my lads on the field and protect a couple who are carrying knocks.

“A mention also goes out to the regular reserve lads, who came into our squad and didn’t disgrace themselves at all. Great attitude and application.

“On a whole Saturday was a good day for us.”

Sutton: Taylor, Williams, Nicholson, Brandon, Melton, Moses, W Oliver, Narducci, M Oliver, Radeloff, Cawthorn. Subs used: Goude, Garner, L Rumsey.
