Happy boss praises seven-up Long Sutton Athletic as they batter Belvedere

Scorching hot Long Sutton smashed Stamford Belvedere 7-0 at London Road on Saturday as both Sam Moses and Matt Cawthorn netted hat-tricks.

The Magpies made an explosive start to the ChromaSport PDFL Division One clash, going 2-0 up inside two minutes with Moses firing home and Lawrence Brandon heading home. Man-of-the-match Moses, who caused all sorts of problems on the right, then smashed his second into the top corner before crossing for player/boss Cawthorn to bury his 30th of the season.

Cawthorn added his second and Sutton’s fifth with a header on the half-hour, then completed his treble when he rounded the keeper before the break.

Moses had to wait until the 85th minute for his third, notching with a close-range finish to round off the rout.

Sutton’s delighted player/boss heaped praise on his side – but challenged them to keep their standards high for the rest of the season.

Cawthorn said: “I thought we showed great character and spirit on Saturday.

“The mentality we showed in the warm-up was great and we took that straight into the game.

“We started at a blistering pace and the midfield was immense,  creating plenty of chances.

“Stamford couldn’t get to grips with Moses as he scored two and set up two within half an hour.

“In recent weeks I think that we have lacked the desire to go and put teams out of sight. But, certainly for 45 minutes, we battered Stamford and got our rewards.

“It was a disappointing second half, but with the scoreline heavily in our favour we took our feet off the gas and sat in.

“Credit goes to Carl Taylor in goal, he didn’t have a lot to do but when called upon he made a couple of cracking saves.

“Concentration levels have to be kept all round.

“I’m pleased for Sam to get a hat-trick, but also pleased with the defensive side of the team to keep a clean sheet.”
