Great turnout at Tydd St Giles Golf Club’s Pairs Open

More than 90 golfers from around the region took part in a Pairs Stableford Open competition at Tydd St Giles Golf Club – raising nearly £500 for charity in the process.

Shooting the best score as visitors’ winners were Brian Venters and Ian Hogg (Ely) with 45 points, ahead of Mike Johnson and Chris Sturman in second on 43 points and Harold Handcock and Les Bentall in third on 41 points.

The home winners were Mick Vassal and Peter Wheeler with 43 points, with Tim Murphy and Tony Petch second on countback ahead of Terry Sambridge and Dennis Savory after both scored 41 points.

The nearest to the pin on the fourth hole was Tydd’s Wheeler, while the nearest the pin on the eighth hole was Venters. Dick Martin, of Tydd, was closest on the 11th, with Toft’s Bill Collins closest on the 16th.

A special prize for best turned out golfer on the day went to Ken Parker.

Organiser Roy Pesterfield said: “Thanks to all for taking part, it turned out to be an excellent day.

“I’d also like to thank the greens staff for their excellent work in getting the course ready as it had been closed the day before after very heavy rain.

“I am also pleased to announce – that with the players generosity from the raffle and the halfway house – £489 was raised for the seniors’ designated charity for 2017, which is the Papworth Hospital.”
