Golf round-up: Super Spalding 3rd storm to sensational Stoke Rochford win

Spalding Golf Club’s third team enjoyed an impressive 4-2 win over their counterparts from Stoke Rochford on Friday.

The wins came from Greg Wright and Andy Green, Richard Baker and Martin Broderick, Graham Chamberlain and Jose Carles and Andy Cunnington and Louie Gooderson at Surfleet.

  • Spalding’s mixed team took a bit of a pasting away to Peterborough on Friday, losing 5-1.

Many of the matches were closer than the scores suggest and were lost on the greens, where the home side took advantage of their local knowledge.

The only win came from Rod Filby and Carol Holland (3&2), with defeats suffered by Neil Wilkinson and Lainey Mclenam (5&3), Peter Gooderson and Chris Leggett (2&1), Keith Holland and Jean

Wilkinson (3&1), Monty Brittain and Mags Filby (8&6) and Steve Leggett and Olive Gooderson (1 down).

  • Spalding’s senior men were handed a 5.5-0.5 reverse by hosts Royal Cromer on Friday.

In a match played in beautiful conditions on the pictureque course, the home side were in fantastic form.

The solitary half from Spalding came from Lester Pybus and John Keeton.

Suffering defeats were Peter Bridge and Gary King (5&4), Jim Dobson and Brendan D’Abreo (2&1), Albert Jacobs and Mike Gould (4&3), Richard Edwards and Peter Julian (2&1) and David Halfteck and Alan Pritchard (2 down).

The seniors did fare better in their previous game at Sutton Bridge, winning 4.5-3.5. The wins came from Monty Brittain and Jim Dobson (6&4), Howard Greaves and John Moses (1up) and Mike

Gould and Rick Edwards (4&3), while halves came from Dennis Farnsworth and Peter Julian, Albert Jacobs and Mike Browning and Ray Andrew and Alan Pritchard.

Tydd St Giles Golf Club

Mick Vassall lead the way in a tight Tydd St Giles May Medal event in the seniors’ section.

A score of 72 (78-6) was enough for Vassall to top the Division One leaderboard, two shots ahead of both Tim Martin and Derek Marsh.

The other winners were Baz Smith (Division Two), Barry Hill (Division Three) and Paul Kingswood (Division Four).
