Frecklington to put Spalding United through their paces ahead of King’s Lynn test

Spalding United’s new-look squad reported back for pre-season training on Saturday as the Dave Frecklington era officially got under way.

The new Tulips chief missed the session due to being on holiday, but he is now back – and hungry to put his squad through their paces.

Frecklington, who is still looking to bring a few new faces to the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field, has got a few sessions with the squad ahead of Tuesday’s pre-season opener at King’s Lynn Town (7.45pm).

He said: “I missed the first session back, but Chris Rawlinson (assistant boss) tells me that the lads were in good shape and have looked after themselves over the close season.

“I’m looking forward to putting them through their paces ahead of the King’s Lynn game, hopefully we’ll be in good shape for that.

“We’ll look to put the players through three or four hard sessions to get them back in business.

“We’ve got a couple of triallists to run the rule over, but in general the 13 or so players we have are very good ones.

“We’re perhaps a few weeks away from the usual fallout at other clubs, so I’m not expecting any transfer activity until then.

“Besides, we’re very keen to give the young players a try. There’s no point loading the squad at this stage, as they’d be starved of an opportunity.”

Frecklington hopes to have a full squad available for the trip to The Walks, meaning that new signings Matthew Varley, Nathan Whitehead, Chris Hamilton, Bradley Barraclough and Jason Field should all be in action.

That friendly serves as the perfect warm-up for Spalding’s first competitive game of the season at Boston United the following Saturday (Lincolnshire Senior Cup, 3pm).
