Spalding blacksmiths Chain Bridge Forge is embarking on an ambitious art project this weekend – and everyone is invited to help out with the creative endeavour.
On Saturday (27), the forge –one of South Holland’s most popular heritage sites – will host a free event at its site in High Street, Spalding.
A spokesman for the forge said everyone is invited to attend and help create a metal chain link in the blacksmith’s forge.
“It is hoped that more than 50 chain links will be made on the day, which will then be joined together and become part of a massive 25ft long artwork due to be installed outside Chain Bridge Forge later this year,” the spokesman said.
The artwork, which will form a barrier at the front of the forge, will depict the work of the forge and the last blacksmith who owned it, Geoff Dodd. It will be made of metal panels and include a number of mosaics.
The art installation is one of a series planned – with others due to be created at two other South Holland
“living history” visitor attractions, Moulton Mill and Pinchbeck Engine.
“The Chain Bridge Forge chain link event is a great opportunity to get involved with making a piece of history, as well as experiencing first-hand the ancient art of blacksmithing,” the spokesman said.
While everyone is welcome, organisers of the art event said the free chain link making activity is suitable for children aged seven and over, as participants need to be tall enough to hold a hammer and strike the top of the anvil.
The event will run from 10am to 3.30pm, and there is no need to book in advance.
