Force is quick to pick up 999 calls

Data released this week shows Lincolnshire Police are one of the best in the country when it comes to answering emergency 999 calls.

Home Office figures made public on Tuesday showed that the average, mean time it took to pick-up a 999 call during April this year was just 6.3 seconds.

The table is topped by Northamptonshire which comes in at 6.2 seconds, followed by Avon and Somerset also at 6.3.

Lincolnshire also does well in the percentage of calls which are answered in less than ten seconds – at 88.5 per cent.

Avon and Somerset top the league at 91.3 per cent followed by Nottingham on 88.7 per cent with Lincolnshire next in line.

The worst performing force in terms of the ten second answering was Humberside at 2.2 per cent followed by South Yorkshire on 17.6 per cent.

Norfolk answered 84 per cent within ten seconds, Leicestershire 87.8 per cent and Cambridgeshire 71.2 per cent.

“The 999 performance data released shows, when someone is in immediate danger, in Lincolnshire we answer 999 calls quicker than most other forces in the country,” said Mike Modder-Fitch, of the force’s control room.

“Over the last ten years, the 999 calls we received have been increasing by around ten per cent year-on-year. At points over summer 2021 we were taking more than 12,000 999 calls a month,” he added.

“We continue to face many challenges and our ambition is to maintain these excellent standards while working to improve our response times when people call 101. We will be recruiting again in September.”
