Dunn says Pinchbeck United will prioritise possible cup glory over UCL Premier Division finale

Pinchbeck United player/boss Ian Dunn admits that he’s prioritising Wednesday night’s Hinchingbrooke Cup final over Saturday’s Future Lions UCL Premier Division finale.

The Knights will clinch fourth place with victory over Oadby Town at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field (3pm), but Dunn has his eyes firmly set on the final with Godmanchester Rovers at Peterborough Northern Star on Wednesday (7.45pm).

Any slip-up against Oadby would open the door for South Holland rivals Holbeach United to leapfrog them in the table, but Pinchbeck are carrying a host of injuries.

Nick Jackson, Chris Shipley, Luke Wilson, Harry Vince, Jason Field, Jordan Nuttell and Alex Beck are all struggling – and Dunn is adamant that a cup win would mean more than fourth place.

“We have to prioritise the final,” said Dunn. “You get nothing for fourth place, but we could win another trophy on Wednesday.

“We’ve won something every year that Allan Ross and I have been here and want to keep that going.

“We’ll have to rest a few players on Saturday, but I do think we’ll have enough quality on the pitch to get a result.

“Godmanchester is the harder game. If they were in our league, they’d be challenging for the title.

“We go into the game as underdogs, that’s for sure. If they have an off day and we’re at our best, we could win the game.

“Our problem has been taking our chances. We’ve drawn ten games in the league and realistically should have won seven of them – that’s wasteful.”

Godmanchester are third in the the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division, but lost 2-1 at lowly Ely City on Monday.
