Domestic abuse totals 90 in April

There are three incidents of domestic violence in Spalding every day.

Police in the area dealt with 90 cases in April alone and the number is not unusual, said local inspector Gareth Boxall.

He reassured residents that officers take the matter very seriously.

“These are complicated and lengthy investigations that can tie-up several officers,” he said.

“We strive to bring all domestic abuse perpetrators to justice.”

As the figures came to light, Moulton Chapel-based poet Benjamin Zephaniah admitted he had also carried out acts of domestic violence in the past.

The acclaimed author was speaking on national radio as his autobiography was recently launched.

He said he was violent to a girlfriend ‘at one point’ and the way he had treated some of his girlfriends was terrible.

“As I got older I really regretted it. It burned my conscience so badly,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

He said that he had a change of heart and stopped following the crowd.

He has previously spoken about coming from a violent home where his father beat his mother.

Inspector Boxall said incidents in South Holland spanned every age range and type of home.

Three recent incidents included an 80-year-old man who was bailed on charges of assault and battery on April 26.

The previous day a 22-year-old Spalding man was charged with assault causing actual bodily harm and controlling and coercive behaviour. His bail application was refused.

And a 48-year-old man was charged with assault and battery on April 28 in West Pinchbeck.

“These three incidents demonstrate that domestic abuse covers all generations and that we continue to take positive action in every case,” said Insp Boxall.

Lincs Police’s domestic violence unit can be contacted on 101.
