A disciplined defensive display helped Holbeach United get their United Counties League Premier Division campaign off to winning start on Tuesday night.
The Tigers set up to frustrate the free-scoring Cuckoos who had smashed 12 goals past league rivals Huntingdon Town in Saturday’s FA Cup clash.
And the plan worked a treat as Holbeach stifled Yaxley’s attacking threat to inflict a home defeat on one of the sides expected to compete with the Tigers at the top end of the Premier Division table.
Tommy Treacher’s deflected shot just past the half-hour mark eventually settled the contest with Holbeach coming close to doubling their tally.
Aaron Eyett broke clear after the break only to shoot wide with ex-Spalding winger Dan Cotton going closest for the home side with a late effort which hit the post.
Tigers: Drury, Walton, Cartwright, Warfield, Jackson, Tinkler, Clitheroe, Eyett, Eason, Treacher, Wright. Used: Coddington, Worthington.
The win completed an opening week victory double for Holbeach who had beaten Swaffham 4-1 in Saturday’s FA Cup clash.
They travel to Cogenhoe on Saturday, looking to complete their third victory in seven days.
The Cooks suffered a 2-1 defeat at home to Oadby in their United Counties League opener on Tuesday night.
