Dark yet sumptuous musical

The students of Act II Theatre Company are taking to the stage this month with Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s deliciously dark yet sumptuous musical based on a number of Grimm fairy tales.

Director Charlotte Gernert said: “It’s an ambitious project, with some very complex music, but one that we are relishing with much enjoyment.”

Like the trees in the wood, the musical intertwines many beloved fairy tales, including Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood.

The tales (based on the Brothers Grimm versions) are woven together with an original story of a childless baker and his wife.

As the characters search for their happily ever afters, the consequences of their wishes become apparent.

This amateur production is presented by arrangement with Josef Weinberger Ltd on behalf of Music Theatre International of New York.

Into The Woods takes place at the South Holland Centre, Spalding, nightly until Saturday. Performances are at 7.30pm, with a matinee at 2.30pm on Saturday. Tickets are available from the South Holland Centre box office on 01775 764777 or from www.southhollandcentre.co.uk, priced at £9.50 for adults, £8 for concessions, and £7 each for groups of ten or more.

Anyone of secondary school age (particularly boys!) who is interested in joining the music theatre class can get in touch with Act II by calling 01775 766921, emailing [email protected] or visiting www.act2online.co.uk

The class runs on Thursdays 4.30pm-6pm and costs £5.50 a week, (payable weekly so if you don’t come, you don’t pay) and the first week is free! The class reopens for new members and the next show will be announced on Thursday, April 23.
