Dark day for Holbeach United but Moulton and Pinchbeck progress in Shield

Holbeach United suffered a shock home defeat against ChromaSport UCL Premier Division rivals Rothwell Corinthians on another weather-hit Saturday of football action.

The Tigers were upset 2-1 by their lowly visitors at Carter’s Park in what was their first game of 2016 – and were also rocked by a nasty injury to attacker Aaron Eyett.

Holbeach fell behind inside the first minute as Andy White netted on 22 seconds, before the same player doubled the lead just past the hour.

The Tigers did reply through striker Tom Gosling, but couldn’t find a leveller.

Matters got worse late on when Rothwell’s Kalon Peniasko was sent off for a tackle that left Eyett facing up to eight weeks out with an ankle injury.

The loss drops Holbeach to fifth in the table and leaves them with plenty of ground to make up in the title race.

Elsewhere, Spalding United’s trip to Kidsgrove Athletic was postponed due to a frozen pitch.

Only two games were possible in Evo-Stik League First Division South, meaning the Tulips remain in fourth place in the standings.

In the ChromaSport PDFL, Pinchbeck United and Moulton Harrox are on collision course in the President Premier Shield after both booked places in the semi-finals.

Harrox were 3-0 winners over Uppingham Town at Broad Lane thanks to goals from Ollie Maltby, Ben Allen and skipper Billy King.

Also in fine form were Pinchbeck, who dispatched Thorney 5-2 at Knight Street. Their goals came from Ash Murrell, Brad Murrell, Tyler Wright, Loz Lambley and player/boss Ian Dunn.

Joining them in the semi-finals are AFC Stanground, who beat Holbeach United Reserves 3-1.

There was also a fine cup with for Sutton Bridge United, who breezed past hosts Westwoodside Rangers 6-0 in the Lincs Junior Cup.
