Cricket legends set for fundraiser

Moulton Seas End is set to host a number of legendary cricketers for a charity match next month.

West Indian batting great Gordon Greenidge as well as former England cricketers Philip DeFreitas, Devon Malcolm, Chris Lewis and spinner John Emburey will feature for the Lashings XI taking on a Batten Disease Family Association (BDFA) XI at Seas End Hall on August 9.

Former England leg spinner Chris Schofield captains the side and other players in the squad who could feature include the likes of Pakistani Saqlain Mushtaq and West Indian Tino Best.

Spalding Town Cricket Club’s Matt Gill has organised the match as a fundraiser for the BDFA.

Matt is friends with a family who have two young children affected by the nerve disease and has put together a side to take on the Lashings XI cricketing side set up for fundraisers like this.

He’s put together a group of local players set to test their abilities against the star-studded squad.

Now Matt’s looking for organisations and cricket fans to snap up the tickets to the dinner that accompanies the match where you will be able to sit and eat alongside a cricketing legend.

“It’s going to be a great day,” he said. “The thought of playing against some of our cricketing heroes is really exciting.

“As a local cricketer you don’t expect to get the chance to play against names like this.

“Having these legends here is an injection in the arm for local sport

“Anyone who comes down will have a really enjoyable day.

“There’s plenty who will be coming down for the game but we do also need to get people attending the lunch.

“It’s rare you will get the chance to see these legends up close and you will be able to do that while also making a difference to a small charity.”

Tickets for the lunch with the stars costs £1,000 for a table of 10 or £85 for an individual.

“Nobody is making a profit from this,” Matt said.

“All the money is going towards the BDFA, a small charity that I’ve seen does so much for families affected by the disease.

“There’s a family I know who have two youngsters with this life limiting disease.

“This was an opportunity to do something for them.”
