COMMUNITY COLUMN: Apps to help your healthy lifestyle

Karen Johnsonby Karen Johnson – South Holland District Council community development officer

With the nights drawing in and mornings getting darker, for some of us it is an easy excuse to stay at home and relax.
We would like to see more people buck this trend and that’s why we’re supporting a brand new campaign from Public Health England.

One You is a groundbreaking campaign aimed at helping the nation’s adults, especially those between 40 and 60 years old, avoid future diseases caused by our modern day lifestyles.

Our busy lifestyles mean that our own health is often at the bottom of our list of priorities.

Remember that it’s important to take time to look after yourself; not only will you feel the benefits but so will your family. It’s never been easier to eat bigger food portions and to realise at the end of the day that we have been sat down for most of it!

Our everyday habits and behaviours – such as eating too many unhealthy foods, drinking too much alcohol, continuing to smoke and not being active enough is responsible for 40 per cent of all deaths in England and costs the NHS £11billion a year!

One You aims to encourage adults, particularly those in middle age, to take control of their health to enjoy significant benefits now and in later life.

On their website www.nhs.uk/oneyou adults can take the One You “How are you?” health quiz to get personalised recommendations on how to start the fight back to a healthier you.

Check out your score and see what tools and what One You suggests to help you.

Four apps can be downloaded too – these include Easy Meals, Couch to 5k, Drinks Tracker and Smokefree. For more information and to take the online quiz visit www.nhs.uk/oneyou now.
