If you are looking for something to do with the kids this Bank Holiday you may want to consider the Parrot Zoo, just a few miles down the road at Friskney.
The attraction cares for one of the largest collections of parrots in the UK, but there’s loads more than just the colourful birds to see.
You will discover a family of meerkats, which just keeps getting larger each year.
There’s also the splendid group of ring tailed lemurs. Meet Clarence and Kola (mum and dad) and their youngsters and watch how the children cling to their parents one minute, then fly into the trees the next, and before you know they will be bouncing around their enclosure at lightning speed, screaming and simply loving life.
The parrot zoo is also home to a couple of amazing coatimundis, strong little Brazilian creatures which will have you in stitches as they lounge about in their hammocks or run up and down vertically on their ropes.
Then there’s the kookaburras and cranes – you may even witness their courtship dance.
And when you’ve had your fill of the animals, you can fill up at the Rainforest Diner or enjoy a drink at the Cockatiel Bar.
The kids can also run wild on the adventure playground or find a souvenir of their visit at the gift shop.
There is also a walkthrough aviary – one of the most popular attractions at the zoo – and as an added bonus you can visit the 11-acre Ivanvale Nature Reserve, boasting thousands of indigenous trees and a huge lake which is home to all manner of birds.
The zoo is designed with all in mind, so even if you are in a wheelchair you will have no trouble accessing all areas.
Parking is free and the zoo is open from 10am to 5pm each day.
Admission is £7.95 for adults aged 16 to 59, £7.50 for children aged three to 15 and concessions. Family tickets cost £26.50.
