Close win over Wisbech for Ladies’ 1st

Wisbech Town 1st 2
Spalding Ladies’ 1st 3

Goals: Charlotte Maplethorpe (2), Evie Maltby
Spalding looked to improve on the pre-season defeat against Wisbech and were delighted to overcome the team riding in second place in the league.
Spalding were unable to convert an early short corner and it was Wisbech who found the net from a short corner on 18 minutes.
Spalding got their heads straight back in the game with Maplethorpe converting a chance within a minute of going behind.
The parity was short lived, however, after a great clearance on the line by Maltby, Wisbech took the lead once again.
Spalding started the second half well and equalised when Maltby scored with a trademark short corner strike.
Maltby then turned provider with a cracking ball to Ellie Holland who set up Maplethorpe for her second.
Cambridge City 5th 7
Spalding Ladies’ 2nd 0

A depleted ladies’ 2nd squad travelled to Cambridge in hope they could hold off the strong City 5th or keep the score line low.
City had an abundance of players and used this to their advantage.
Spalding were two down but held the play well with solid defensive play.
In the second half, a confident City changed their formation again and overloaded in the midfield.
Spalding were unable to match this, and City sadly outplayed the visiting team.
Spalding Ladies’ 3rd 3
Cambridge Nomads 2nd 1
Goals: Sophie Wilson, AJ Bunyan, Sam Foston

The ladies’ 3rd started strongly against an experienced Cambridge Nomads side and immediately put the opposition under incredible pressure.
Spalding came out thirsty in the second half and won a handful of short corners and a goal quickly followed when Bunyan crossed the ball towards the post, where Wilson was pressuring the defender and a deflection ensued letting Wilson claim her first league goal.
Not long after, Bunyan showed off some impressive 3D skills and volleyed the ball into the net to make it 2-0.
Nomads came back on the attack and won a penalty corner for their efforts and scored making it 2-1.
Spalding upped the pace again with Foston slotting home a well-deserved goal.
Spalding continued piling on the pressure until the final whistle and were relieved and excited to have bagged three points. Spalding’s keeper had very little to do for the entire game which was testament to the team performance.
