Clinical Clitheroe ensures that the Saints march on in the Lincs Junior Cup

Jake Clitheroe notched two more goals as Tydd St Mary beat hosts Nettleham 3-1 on Saturday to progress in the Lincs Junior Cup.

The hitman took his tally for the season to 18 in six games with a first-half double at the Lincs League side, with Dan Piccaver the other scorer.

The Saints started the stronger and were rewarded for their hard work on eight minutes when a well-crafted pass from Dan Clitheroe at left-bback found his brother Jake Clitheroe with a lovely ball.

The striker beat his man and then slotted into the bottom left hand corner 1-0.

Tydd continued their fine play and scored again when Stu Easey pinged a great bullet pass into Jake Clitheroe’s feet on 21 minutes.

He did well to shake of a robust challenge and then smashed a great shot into the bottom right hand corner of the net to give the Nettleham keeper no chance.

Things got better for the Saints on 36 minutes when an Easey free-kick from the left perfectly picked out Dan Piccaver to leap the tallest and nod home for 3-0.

Nettleham had their chances and an excellent one-on-one block by David Cooper in goal for Tydd kept the three-goal margin alive.

The second half was a completely different story and Nettleham came out fired-up. They grabbed a goal back after just a minute of the second half restart to make it 3-1.

Wave after wave of attacks by the north Lincoln side followed for the next 45 minutes, but the Saints held on for a deserved win.

The game was marred for Tydd in the final minute when Ash Godfrey went in 50/50 with the Nettleham keeper but was adjudged to have committed a dangerous tackle and was shown a straight red card.

Tydd manager Paul Clarke said: “The courage and determination showed by the lads was outstanding today.

“We had a game plan and a discipline and we stuck to it perfectly. Brilliant!”

Tydd will host either Butchers Arms or Crowle Town Colts in the second round on October 7.
