Cheers!…£25,000 conversion of pub to day nursery

A gap in the market for a day nursery in the Holbeach Drove area has led to the £25,000 conversion of a former pub.

Paula Somers, who has eight years’ experience as a childminder, and brother-in-law Mark Dale teamed up to launch Giggles Galore this month.
It follows an extensive refurbishment of The Golden Ball in Main Road.

Mark said: “We’ve been looking for suitable premises over the last 18 months and this property became available.
“We got the keys in September and spent 13 weeks refurbishing it with builders and help from family and friends.”

Until just before Christmas, Paula ran a childcare business from home in Whaplode Drove.
Now, collaborating with Shepeau Stow and Gedney Hill Primary School Federation, Giggles Galore is offering before and after school care, something which Paula and Mark felt would benefit working parents in the area.
A bus stop has been installed outside the nursery, enabling children to be dropped off by school transport.

Mark, who is a director and will work ‘back of house’, said: “Paula is passionate about childcare and we want to provide a top quality service.
“We’ve got room for 40 children and there’s currently ten to 12 per day.
“We’re looking to ramp that up to 20 by the end of the year and increase staffing with that ratio.”

Currently, there are four direct members of staff, with bank staff available.
Mark added: “We’ve used various local businesses in getting the place ready and we hope that shops and garages in the area might increase their trade as a result of us being there.
“So, while it is a commercial venture for us, we hope there are benefits for others too.”

Giggles Galore is registered with OFSTED.
