Buoyant skipper Rob Ambrose has admitted that Spalding Town need to earn promotion from the South Lincs and Border League in order to progress as a club.
Town, relegated from the Lincs ECB Premier Division last season, are desperate to return to the county big time at the first attempt.
Currently 20 points clear in the Premier Division and on a run of six wins on the spin, Ambrose and his side have only been beaten by a Market Deeping 2nd side that were inspired by top tier bowler Lee Peacock.
The Spalding captain doesn’t wish to sound arrogant, but insists that the club as a whole can’t progress while the top side are stuck in the South Lincs and Border League.
“I’m very happy with how things are going,” said Ambrose. “We’ve been ruthless in recent weeks.
“I don’t mean to sound arrogant, but we’re not worrying too much about the opposition at the moment.
“We know that if we turn up and play to our potential, we should win games pretty comfortably at this level.
“For the entire club, it’s key that we get back into the Lincs ECB Premier Division.
“We’ll not progress playing at this standard.”
Ambrose was speaking after leading his side to a win over Sleaford 2nd on Saturday.
He was impressed by the performance of his patched-up side, which was missing key men Warren Nel, Dan Milgate and Jimmy Hook.
All three are back in contention for Saturday’s trip to Stamford Town (1.30pm), but the performances of Cameron Roy, young William Barnes and Josh Lawrence have given him a selection headache.
Ambrose added: “There’s a real feel-good factor at the club at the moment, with the second team also topping the league and the thirds progressing nicely.
“It was nice to have a few of the second team lads play on Saturday and perform well. We were actually as good with the ball as we have been all season.
“We’ve got a full squad to pick from this weekend, so I’ve got a few big decisions to make.
“The fact that we didn’t really miss three of our top players last week was a real bonus and bodes well.
“Stamford will be a test for us, they’ve got a few handy players. But we’ll focus on ourselves.”
