A Long Sutton dad-of-four is taking on a mammoth challenge this weekend as he walks 62.1 miles in 24 hours.
Calvin Leuty is taking on the 100km Thames Path Ultra Marathon, walking from Putney to Henley-on-Thames in aid of Blood Cancer UK, a charity dedicated to funding life-saving research and supporting those affected by blood cancer.
He is embarking on the challenge in memory of his wife Sarah’s best friend Hannan Overton.
Calvin’s journey will take him through historic towns, riverside villages, and miles of tranquil landscapes, all while championing a cause close to many hearts.
In previous years, Calvin has aided Sarah in organising The Opal Ball, held at Spalding’s Springfields Events Centre, to raise funds for the charity, but due to time constraints and family commitments the event hasn’t happened for a couple of years.
He said: “I pondered what I could do to continue to help fundraise for Blood cancer UK and my mind came to rest on the Thames Path Ultra Marathon.
“So many lives are touched by blood cancer, and I wanted to do something that not only pushes me physically but also helps fund the incredible work Blood Cancer UK does.
“Blood Cancer UK funds vital research and provides support to patients and families, and every step I take will be in honour of those fighting this disease, and those families who have been affected in the past.”
The response from the community has already been inspiring. Calvin has raised £625 of his £1,000 target, and he’s hoping to keep the momentum going in the final stretch before the walk, whether it’s a small contribution or cheering him on from afar, every bit of encouragement helps.
