Councillors have criticised the amount of roadworks in Spalding, saying that they’re causing the town to become ‘gridlocked’.
Members of South Holland District Council aired concerns that too many roadworks have been allowed to take place in Spalding at the same time – with calls for work to be staggered to reduce congestion in the town.
In the last week alone, there have been roadworks in Commercial Road, Priory Road, Water Lane and Cowbit Road – with more planned for Pinchbeck Road.
Councillors called for Lincolnshire County Council – which is in charge of highways matters – to do more to manage the situation.
At a full council meeting on Wednesday, January 28, Coun James Le Sage said: “In St John’s ward at the moment, we seem to have an exceptional amount of roadworks going on.
“I know we don’t have control over everything that’s done, but in Spalding, it only takes one major road to go down and the town is gridlocked.
“I just wondered whether we could perhaps have a word with our county colleagues and see if we could get a bit more dynamic about how roads and repairs are meted out, because it’s getting increasingly difficult to get around Spalding.”
Coun Nick Worth, leader of the district council, said that he was also finding it difficult to get around other parts of South Holland because of the amount of roadworks which are currently taking place.
He added: “I even have to go on a detour around my own village now to try and get to Spalding somehow.”
He explained that he’d been discussing a matter with a planning inspector, who had said they would like to visit
Holbeach St Matthew to look into an issue but was ‘confused’ by the road closures.
Coun Worth added: “He wasn’t quite sure how to find it and I think that kind of says it all.”
