Bronze medal and club record for Nene Valley Harrier Emma at BUCS event at Bedford

Nene Valley Harrier Emma Hornsby leapt to a new club record en-route to bagging a bronze medal at the BUCS Championships at Bedford.

First year student Hornsby, who was competing for Loughborough University, was up against 36 others in the ladies’ long jump.

Held in atrocious conditions, she recorded jumps of 5.43m and 5.32m to qualify for the final in fifth place.

The improved weather conditions on the following day led to a first round jump of 5.50m, which put her into second place.

Hornsby then followed this up with a personal best (PB) and club record leap of 5.61m in the second round.

That placed her third, a position she was able to retain throughout the final four rounds.

Her final jump of 5.60m looked longer, but it gave her a clear third place.

Hornsby was joined in making the finals on day two of competition by fellow Harrier Emily Maltby, who was competing for Bedfordshire University in the triple jump. Her qualifying jump of 11.05m was a season’s best – again achieved in the rough weather.

Maltby then repeated the distance, recording 11.06m in the final despite a slight head wind to finish in a creditable tenth place.

Two other Nene Valley athletes unfortunately failed to make the final, but did compete hard in their heats/qualifiers.

Sean Garmory, running for Newcastle University in heat six of the 400m, attacked the back straight well but tired in the home straight. Although recording a creditable 53.65secs he was fifth.

Eliie Mae Stokes, another first year student, was competing for Gloucester University in the javelin. She threw 32.85m.
