Boss Thorogood praises ‘great’ derby win as Pinchbeck United focus on surviving relegation

Boston Town 0 Pinchbeck United 2

Lewis Thorogood praised his Pinchbeck United side as a massive 2-0 derby victory at Boston Town on Saturday kept their survival bid in the Uhlsport UCL Premier Division North very much alive.

Pinchbeck grabbed their first win since mid-November as they stunned their high-flying hosts Boston with second-half goals from Avi Vieira and Nathan Stevens at the Mortgages For You Stadium.

It was vital that the Knights picked up the three points, with relegation rivals Selston seeing off Newark 2-1 to drag them into what now looks like a three-way battle for the second relegation spot.

Thorogood’s side remain 17th in the 18-team division, but are just two points behind both Selston and Newark, having played more games than both, with Holbeach United looking doomed below, some 15 points adrift.

“It was a great win for us,” enthused the Knights boss. “Obviously, we have to consign it to history now and focus on the next game.

“But, with the results going the way they did, it was absolutely vital that we won the game.

“It has pulled Newark into the dogfight too and we’re only two points behind both sides instead of what could have been five.

“We also still have Newark to play, so keeping them in our sights is important.

“What this win does is prove that this group of players are capable of going to the leading sides and getting a result.

“It gives us great confidence for the rest of the run-in and is a real lifeline for our survival hopes.

“Full credit to the lads, they’ve been showing signs of being able to produce a win like this and we’re now full of confidence and belief.”
