Boss Dunn relieved as Pinchbeck United roar back to seal Lions victory

Pinchbeck United twice came from behind to beat Stamford Lions 4-2 in the ChromaSport PDFL Premier Division at Knight Street on Saturday.

Rob Montgomery headed home a Tom Edwards cross to give Lions an early lead, but Pinchbeck levelled when Callum Lawe squared for top scorer Ollie Maltby to fire home.

Only a great defensive clearance on the line denied Maltby a second before the break, before an early second-half penalty from Liam Ogden was well saved by Lions keeper John Feetham.

The visitors went up the other end and took a 2-1 lead thanks to another Montgomery header – leaving Pinchbeck staring down the barrell at a potentially costly loss.

But they equalised immediately when Maltby headed home an expertly delivered Luke Gardner cross and never looked back. Brad Murrell then volleyed Pinchbeck ahead with a crisp drive that came following a period of pressure.

Tom Panton put the game to bed when he charged down a clearance from Feetham and tapped home to make it 4-2.

Pinchbeck player/boss Ian Dunn felt his side were worthy winners as they climbed up to seventh in the table.

“It’s funny, we were left feeling a little disappointed,” said Dunn. “They had two chances and scored both of them.

“It seems like every side is taking every chance against us at the moment.

“I felt we started very slowly and deserved to be behind, but we rallied and probably should have been 2-1 up at half time.

“We then missed a penalty and went 2-1 down – and we began to worry that it might be one of those days again.

“But the lads responded really well and we soon equalised. In the end you’d have to say that we were pretty comfortable and could easily have won by a few more.

“We have to be happy with the result, which keeps us in the mix after playing a lot of the top sides early in the season.”

Pinchbeck: Ashton, B Murrell, Gardner, Lawe (Eyes), Smith, Bishop, Panton (Brooks), Shipley, Ogden (Francis), Ross, Maltby. Not used: Harris.

  • Rivals Pinchbeck United and Moulton Harrox will now face each other on Saturday at Knight Street (2pm).

Both sides have been given byes in the Lincs Junior Cup after their opponents pulled out of their respective games this weekend.

The South Holland duo opened up dialogue about playing each other earlier in the week, but it depended on Whittlesey Athletic A agreeing to change to kick-off time of their scheduled game with Pinchbeck’s Reserves.

That has now been sorted, meaning the pair will clash for a second time in the PDFL Premier Division this season in what is sure to be a cracking contest.
