Blooming Silver for Long Sutton

Long Sutton is celebrating winning a silver award in this year’s East Midland in Bloom Awards.

It was the only place in South Holland to enter this year’s contest and a call has gone out to encourage others to take part.

Chairman of the South Holland in Bloom committee, Stephen Johnson, said members would like to see new volunteer groups taking part in the contest.

“We have been recently joined by Deeping St Nicholas, which is great, and we know there is some lovely planting going on in our towns and villages which isn’t being recognised.

“It would be great to have more towns, villages and smaller places taking part. Perhaps they don’t realise there is funding available and help as well,” said Mr Johnson.

There will be an open meeting for potential In Bloom volunteers in Holbeach on November 8 from 5pm at the Methodist Church Hall.

Mr Johnson said the former In Bloom group in the town had disbanded and he was hoping there would be new interest.

Long Sutton in Bloom’s Chair Kay Jenkinson said she was delighted with the silver award.

“We weren’t able to attend the awards this year, but it was lovely to get a silver,” she said.

Long Sutton will be taking part in the contest again next year and a new person has been found to carry out the watering duty after an appeal was made.

“We are delighted that we have someone and it means that we can go ahead for next year, ” said Mrs Jenkinson.

Holbeach Primary Academy took an award for the best use of school grounds to enrich the curriculum.

And Long Sutton company GJR Autos for ‘wide ranging, undaunted support for Long Sutton in Bloom.’

The annual event was postponed last year due to the pandemic and judges were out and about earlier in the summer.
