Bench is a fair reminder of dad

A new bench is set to be installed in Ayscoughfee Hall gardens in memory of a man whose family has brought the funfair to Spalding for over 50 years.

The memorial for Roger Tuby Snr, who died in 2024, is due to be put up in time for October when Tuby’s Fun Fair returns to the town for its second visit of the year.

The bench is to be placed in Ayscoughfee on the request of South Holland District Council chairman Jan Whitbourn.

“It was truly sad when we lost Roger Sr, back in late 2024,” she said. “He was so passionate about being here in Spalding with the many friends he had made here over the years.

“I worked closely with Roger Sr, himself a member of the Lions International, hence working on plans for a fitting memorial to him here in Spalding.

“Initially, we had considered placing a bench in the area which the Fun Fair visits each year, but following discussions South Holland District Council consider it has been decided to place a memorial bench in the grounds of Ayscoughfee Hall, alongside another which remembers the late Coun Angela Newton, who was a close friend of the Tuby family for many years.

“It would be an honour to see that put in place and I am sure both of them will be very happy to be side by side again.

“The bench will highlight the fair and have motifs depicting the rides which we all come to see and love each year.

“Thank you to the Tuby family for continuing to be part of Spalding and for helping so many charities each time you have visited our town over the years.

“People are always pleased and proud to see you here and know you take time to welcome everyone into your world of fun and laughter.”

The fair is now organised by Roger’s son, also called Roger.

“It’s a really moving thing Jan’s done,” said Roger Jnr. “Dad would have been so proud to have a bench in

Spalding because it became a second home.

“He had so many friends in the town and it’s really lovely every time that we come back.”
