Race ace Ben Wilson is facing a significant spell on the sidelines after breaking his leg following a crash at the North West 200 event in Northern Ireland last week.
The Kirton racer crashed heavily during practice for the Superstock race on Tuesday evening – resulting in a compound fracture of the femur and causing the session to be red flagged.
Wilson was treated and then transported to hospital in Coleraine.
After stabilising the injury Wilson was transferred to Londonderry, where he underwent a lengthy operation to clean the wound in his leg to prevent infection.
On Friday he was airlifted to Addenbrookes Hospital, near Cambridge, where he was seen by the consultant who is to operate on the leg before putting it in a cast which will remain in place for the next few weeks.
Wilson had already successfully completed the Supersport practice session earlier in the day on the Gearlink Kawasaki machine and had been running well on the EHA Aprilia in the Superstock practice until his crash at the Mill Road roundabout.
He said: “I would just like to say a massive thank you to everyone that has sent me messages of support after my crash on Tuesday at NW200.
“My leg has a really bad break and is going to take a long time and hard work to heal. There have been a lot of people involved in getting me back to the mainland and you all know how grateful I am.
“I know I’m in great hands and I will do whatever it takes to be back on a bike as soon as I can.”
Wilson’s injury was put into perspective by the sad death of Malachi Mitchell Thomas at the same event over the weekend
