Andy’s handy round seals Division One glory in August Medal at Spalding Golf Club

Andy Rafferty topped the Division One standings at Spalding Golf Club’s August Medal at the Surfleet course.

The 14-handicapper shot a 69 to edge Andrew Thomas (11) into second on 70, with David Colwell (13) third on 71.

Lee Phillips (23) topped the Division Two standings on 67, pushing Roger Brown (22) into second on countback.

Third, also on countback, went to Mike Murphy (22) with a 68.

  • The annual President versus Captain competition took place on Friday – and the final score was an honourable 4-4 draw.

The match between the President Max Ellis and the captain John Camm was close, with there never being more than two holes in it. Excellent golf was played by all, with

Ellis and his playing partner Lawrie Hayley on particularly fine form. Camm and his son Steve, who played well, kept the pressure on.

This match was decided on the 18th with Steve Camm getting close for a gimme birdy and, with Lawrie missing his putt, the captain’s pair won.

Other winning pairs: President’s team – Jim Robertson and David Brotherton, Stewart Sharp and John Crampton, Robert Dunmore, and Kevin Siddle and Mal Wray and Dan Milgate. Captain’s team – Sid Chapman and Ron Sudbury, Andy Rafferty and Bob Sutton, John Beba and Keith Hearne.

  • Spalding men’s 3rd team completed their season with a 5.5-0.5 loss at Louth Golf Club.

Andy Cunnington and Richard Baker grabbed the half for Spalding on a very wet day.

  • Spalding’s Senior side were defeated 5.5-2.5 at Belton Park.

Their points came from Jim Dobson and Rod Filby (3&1), Gary King and John Beba (1up) and Lester Pybus and Mike Browning (halved).

p Ladies’ section: Some 38 ladies entered the Myrtle Glenny stableford competition.
The winner was Eden Inglis on 41 points, with Lesley Williams second on countback ahead of Chris Leggett after both scored 38 points.
