A17 summer protest could cause chaos

sutton bridgeLincolnshire Police are working with Sutton Bridge residents to make sure safety is at the forefronts of plans to hold a mass protest against the building of a gasifier in the village.

Residents objecting to plans to build a gasifier in the village have organised a protest on the A17.

The protest is planned for Saturday, July 26 – the first weekend of the school summer holidays – and more than 60 cars are expected to take part in a 5mph drive up and down the A17.

Police have raised safety concerns relating to the protest and Sgt Gareth Boxall, said: “We want to support peaceful and lawful protests but our primary aim is always to ensure the safety of the public.

“It is apparent to me that a protest on the A17 at such a peak time would be unsafe and would serve to cause nothing but disruption.

“I am therefore in discussion with the organisers to ensure this event takes place safely.

“Any police presence on the day will be to ensure the safety of the public.”

The action has been organised by The Wash and Sutton Bridge Protection Group and, as well as the road-based protest, people are being encouraged to walk up and down Bridge Road with placards to make their support known.

Protester Shirley Giles has been working with parish councillors Jenny Rowe and Vicky Hills to collect signatures on a petition against the gasifier.
