A lasting memorial to Rambo

Last weekend saw the first home game for Moulton Harrox 1st XI and they welcomed new kit sponsors to Broad Lane, alongside the Ramsden family.

Moulton Bulb have sponsored the front of the shirt, Spalding Electrical the back and Andrews DIY the sleeve.

They have sponsored full playing whites and training kit for the senior teams.

A black armband and Rambo has been printed on the kit as a memorial to former captain Mark Ramsden who died earlier this year.

The number 1 has been retired and Rambo’s new kit will be displayed in the clubhouse.

* The 1st XI kept their 100 per cent record intact, grabbing maximum points from their opening two games, while the 2nd XI battled bravely before being edged out by Frieston.

1st XI captain Matt Rose wasted no time setting the tone, removing both openers with his signature “just-quick-enough” medium pace.

Curtis Todd picked up where he left off last week, sneaking two more wickets while conceding less than three an over.

However, it was Uddyan Hansana who stole the show, grabbing 3-16 and pulling off a caught-and-bowled, which was arguably the greatest seen at Broad Lane.

Harry Lovell and Flynn McMillan finished the job, with a firm mopping of the tail, bundling Woodhall out for a modest 79.

In reply, Jamie Juckes and Ruari Drumm got Harrox ticking along nicely to 28 before Juckes tried to carve one into the next postcode and missed, bowled for a brisk 18.

Drumm followed soon after but another promising start for the youngster.

Enter Josh Newton, batting at 3, accompanied by the newly promoted McMillan. Newton nurdled and dabbed his way to a composed 20, while McMillan swung with joyful abandon, hitting 20 from just 19 balls to see Harrox safely over the line.

In the 2nd XI match, Freiston elected to bat first on a lively surface.

Their opening pair raced to 93-1, putting Moulton immediately on the back foot. However, once Cam Fox broke the stand, the innings quickly changed pace.

Fox led the charge with an excellent 4-29 from 9 overs, dismantling Freiston’s top and middle order with a mixture of sharp bowling and well-disguised variation.

Alex Baker backed him up with a tight spell of 2-23 from his 9 overs, bowling with real pace and admirable control.

Pradeep Indika impressed with 2-18, while young leg-spinner Zak Maddison picked up a wicket of his own.

A sharp piece of fielding from Anish Suwarneraj added a run-out, as Moulton dragged Freiston back from a flying start to a manageable 176 all out.

The Moulton reply got off to a shaky start, losing both Suwarneraj and Jamie Parrish early, but Lewis Martin steadied the ship.

Martin compiled a well-constructed 28 before being bowled.

Veteran campaigner Clive Bayston dropped anchor at the other end, blocking, battling, and refusing to budge, eventually dismissed for a hard-fought 12 from 67 balls.

Fox capped off a fine personal performance with a stylish 35, keeping Moulton in the hunt.

Despite a few valuable contributions from the lower order, the innings just lacked a finishing kick, closing at 133-9 after the full 45 overs, falling 43 runs short.
