A woman jumped into a dyke to use her wet shirt in a bid to stop a large fire from spreading towards a car on Monday afternoon.
Tina Tomblin, of Gedney, was passing Barrier Bank near Cowbit, just as a stack of straw went up in flames.
She received burns as she attempted to get to the car to see if anyone was in it, but also used her wet shirt to try and stop the fire from spreading further before fire crews came to take over.
“I’d heard a big bang so parked the car,” Tina said before heading to hospital. “I called the emergency services but it was spreading very quickly so I jumped in the dyke to wet my clothes.
“It was the first thing I thought of to do, probably something I’d seen on television before.
“I’d seen there was a car nearby and wanted to stop the flames from getting to the car as I wasn’t sure if someone was in it.
“Thankfully there wasn’t.
“Then I was using my shirt to stop the flames spreading further.
“Others stopped to help too, including two lovely ladies who have helped me.”
Four fire crews battled the blaze well into the night and it remained smouldering as The Voice went to press on Wednesday morning.
The field that also sits alongside the A1175 and bank of the River Welland is popular with walkers who frequently leave their vehicles there before walking along the waterway. Tina said that someone had managed to move the vehicle further away from the fire.
“A spokesman for Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue said yesterday (Tuesday, August 25): “Firefighters used two hose reel jets, two main jets, six beaters and one light portable pump in efforts to extinguish.
“There was significant damage by fire to approximately 500m of stubble field and 600 tonnes of straw bales.
“Fire investigations have concluded but the cause remains undetermined.”
