Royal to unveil Spalding’s new war memorial

The Duke of Kent is set to unveil the new Spalding World Two War Memorial in a ceremony next month.

The Queen’s cousin will be at Ayscoughfee Hall on March 13 as the new memorial to those that lost their lives in the conflict is unveiled.

Around £60,000 is being raised by the Spalding World War Two Memorial group set up as the names of the fallen are not allowed to be added to the listed World War One memorial.

The Duke is the patron of the Royal Armoured Corps War Memorial Benevolent Fund and a strong supporter of the armed forces and served in the Royal Scots Greys and retired in 1976.

He remains Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers among other military appointments.

The original war memorial was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and paid for by local people at a cost of £3,500. It was dedicated in 1922 and is known as the Temple of Remembrance.

Sutton Bridge artist Ruth Baldry was commissioned by the fundraising committee to design the new memorial, which is in the Peace Garden.
