A reactive sign could be put up to try and prevent speeding lorries causing further damage to Cross Keys Bridge at Sutton Bridge.

The Grade II listed structure is suffering from HGVs braking on it while crossing from the direction of King’s Lynn.

The speed limit is 30mph but Lincolnshire County Council claims some are doing more than 40mph.
The council said: “The current problem is HGVs causing significant vibration and movement to the bedplates on the pier head.
“This situation is worsened by the fact that the traffic exceeds the 30mph speed limit in excess of 40mph.”

A temporary speed sign is being proposed on an overhead structure – which itself was introduced recently to try and slow HGVs.
The sign would display the speed of traffic and thank motorists keeping to the limit.

The effect of the sign would be monitored before deciding on an application for it to stay.
