Host of Spalding Indoor Bowls Club members are bidding for international spot

Spalding Indoor Bowls Club will be well represented at this weekend’s international trials at Rugby Thornfield.

The Saturday sees the senior trials take place, with Annie Dunham, Rebecca Simpson, Chelsea Tomlin, Ruby Hill and Louise Catchpole being selected for the ladies.

In the men’s match, Matt Whyers, Graham Smith, Martin Spencer and Mathew Orrey will bid for a place in the team.

On Sunday it’s the turn of the under-25s. Danielle Wild has been selected for her first trial, and will be joined by Ruby Hill and Chelsea Tomlin, with Jordan Philpott playing in the men’s match.

A Spalding IBC spokesman said: “Congratulations to everyone who has been selected and good luck in the trial.”

  • Spalding IBC’s ladies had a good win in the Yetton Trophy as they beat Peterborough by 92-41 in a match played to a home and away format.

At home, Annie Dunham (22-8) and Sylvia Wade (20-12) both won, while Gloria Haney (25-10) and Julie Hicks (25-11) were victorious on the road. They face Barwell in the next round on Saturday, December 9.

The men had a more disappointing morning as they lost to Melton 53-89.

Graham Smith (13-16) and Matt Whyers (11-29) were both beaten at home, as were Ashley Caress (15-25) and Jordan Philpott (14-19) away.

  • Spalding IBC’s fourth over-60s game of the season served up an emphatic 113-84 home success against Grantham on Thursday.

Spalding started strongly and were winning on three rinks at the half way stage – holding the advantage on the aggregate score by 14 shots.

Grantham fought back and, after 15 ends, were winning on one rink and drawing on two rinks and only six shots adrift on the aggregate score.

However, the Spalding side finished strongly – winning on four rinks and securing the aggregate by 29 shots.

The final result saw Spalding collect 16 points to Grantham’s two.

The best winning rink was skipped by Graham Hicks ably assisted by Mike Taylor, Mick Lamb and Brian Skelton.

Captains for the day were David Lunn and Graham Hicks.

  • Spalding IBC organised a 66-player tournament played over three sessions of seven ends per session.

The well deserved winners were the team of Judy Dolton, Emily Day and Jordan Philpott, who shared the £90 prize money. Sue Lovett, Eris Wiltshire and Derek Groves were second, with Connie

Cronin, Rob West and David Lunn third.

A club spokesman said: “Despite the very cold conditions due to a failure in the heating system, the bowlers wrapped up as much as possible and did their best to enjoy themselves despite the adverse conditions.

“Fortunately, the cafe remained open throughout serving hot meals and drinks.

“The bowlers appeared to be playing in a very relaxed manner and laughter could be heard on many occasions.

“A good day for all concerned. Thanks go to Graham Smith for organising the paperwork and Edna Perkins for assisting on the day.”
