Top honour for Spalding seaman

Spalding Royal Naval Association shipmate Charles Angel received one of the best presents just before his 90th birthday.

He received The Chevalier De La Legion d’honneur – the highest medal that France can bestow.

Mr Angel entered service of the Royal Navy in 1943 as a 17-year-old Able Seaman until he left the service in 1947.

The Legion d’honneur is awarded by the French Government to survivors of the D-Day campaign in Normandy, June 1944, during which time Mr Angel was serving on board HMS Havelock H88.

At the end of the war he was awarded 1939-45 Star, France, Germany and Atlantic Star and 1939-45 War Medal.

After living and working in London all his life, upon his retirement he and his wife decided on a quieter life and settled in Spalding.
