Spalding United agree deal with ex-King’s Lynn ace Frew

Spalding United have agreed a deal to bring striker Michael Frew to the club next season.

Frew, who spent last season with King’s Lynn Town, has been a long-term target for Tulips chief Pat Rayment.

The Spalding supremo attempted to land him three years ago and considers the deal a “major coup” for the Evo-Stik League First Division South club.

Target man Frew will provide competition for strikers Tom Waumsley and Jordan Nuttell, with Rayment expecting him to bring the best out of the young duo.

Rayment said: “For me, this a major signing for Spalding United Football Club – especially at the level we’re playing.

“I tried to get him three years ago, but – quite rightly – he didn’t want to drop down to the UCL.

“Getting him on board can only be a good thing. Scoring goals was a massive problem for us last season – and we had some big names, the likes of Andrew Tidswell and Mark Jones, on the books.

“Other than a purple patch when we had Jordan Hempenstall on-song, we really struggled.

“Michael is a real handful and both Tom Waumsley and Jordan Nuttell will benefit from having him around.

“For Tom, this could help take him to the next level after his breakthrough year last season. For Jordan, this should really help him step up to the plate as a player at step four.

“On paper, I’m very happy with my three options and I’m not currently looking to sign any more attackers.

“I’m excited by our options now and can’t wait to get started.”

Rayment is also meeting with a “top defender” this weekend as he bids to fill the voids left by Jamie Stevens, who has joined Holbeach United, and injured lynchpin Nathan Stainfield.
