Eco team wow judges with work

A group of like-minded students are pushing a school’s eco credentials.

University Academy Holbeach’s Eco Team are at the forefront of the school’s bid to get Eco School status and were recently ‘Highly Commended’ by judges at the Lincolnshire Show Schools Challenge where they spoke to attendees about their projects.

Senior teacher Sam Graper said: “The team has been working all year, developing the school’s nature area, meeting each week to take part in different activities to encourage biodiversity in the space.

“Activities have included building a hedgehog house, making bug hotels, making and hanging bird feeders around the area, sewing wildflower seeds and monitoring wildlife with the use of a wildlife camera.

“Pupils spend half an hour every week in the nature area and adjoining glasshouse at the Academy and they also complete other tasks at home.

“At the show, pupils had a stand and display and spent two days meeting and talking to members of the public about the project.

“On the second day, the team also had to give a presentation to judges, in which they informed them about everything they have learned and done.

“The pupils were an absolute credit to the school and we were so proud of them.”
