Blooming great flower festivals

Spring is here and that means it’s time for South Holland’s amazing array of flower festivals.

As ever, a host of local churches will be showing off brilliant displays, particularly over the May Day bank holiday weekend.

  • A ten-day Flower Festival at St Laurence’s Church in Surfleet begins this Saturday (April 25) and runs until Monday, May 4. There’s a special Songs of Praise being held at the church on Sunday, April 26.
  • Gosberton Methodist Church’s Celebrate With Flowers kicks off on Thursday, April 30 and runs until the following Monday. It includes a Songs of Praise at 4.30pm on Sunday, May 3 and a Service of Thankgiving to round it all off at 7pm on Tuesday, May 5.
  • A Village Life is the theme of Moulton Chapel Methodist Church’s event with runs from April 30 to May 4.
  • On the same days A Festival of Flowers is lighting up St Bartholomew’s Church in West Pinchbeck.
  • Also from April 30 to May 4, St Mary’s in Pinchbeck will be holding its Flower Festival with the theme of Rhymes.
  • Celebrating Lincolnshire is the basis for the displays at All Saints’ in Moulton this year. Their flower festival launches on Friday, May 1 and runs until Monday, May 4.
  • At St Mary’s in Long Sutton from Friday, May 1 to Tuesday, May 5 the theme will be TV favourites.
  • The Flower Festival at St Mary and The Holy Rood in Donington will be a special one as they celebrate 60 years of putting on the event. It makes sense then that this year’s theme is Diamonds. It runs from Friday, May 1 until Saturday, May 9 and as well as various stalls and games there will be a children’s quiz.
  • Aesop’s Fables is the basis for this year’s flower festival at St John the Evangalist in Weston Hills. The church is open from 10am to 4pm every day with tea, coffee, cakes, a raffle, stalls and much more on offer.
  • Those at Holbeach Baptist Church on Albert Street have formed their displays around Miracles. It’s open to the public on Sunday and Monday, May 3 and 4.
  • A bit further away in terms of time but right in the centre of town, Celebrating Spalding is the theme for the St Mary and St Nicolas Church festivities on Saturday and Sunday, May 9 and 10.
  • The weekend of Friday, May 15 to Sunday, May 17 will be a special time for Holbeach Methodist Church. It’s Flower Festival will mark the 40th anniversary of the opening of its Albert Street building. Light lunches, tea and cakes will be available.
  • The late May Bank Holiday will see two more flower festivals including St Mary’s in Whaplode. It takes place from Friday, May 22 to Monday, May 25 and is entitled All Things Bright and Beautiful.
  • Starting on the Saturday, May 23 of that weekend is the Question of Sport themed festival at Holbeach’s All Saints’ Church. It runs until Monday, May 25.
