Four decades of inspiring health

A woman who has spent 40 years encouraging South Holland residents to step up and be healthy is stepping down.

That’s how long Cheryl Ingleby has been an employee at Spalding’s Castle Sports Centre after she was asked to take on the running of an activity class.

It sparked a lifelong commitment to the health of thousands in the area.

As well as a host of initiatives within the leisure centre Cheryl’s also earned qualifications including cardiac rehabilitation which she practiced at Peterborough City Hospital alongside her work at the Castle.

She also has higher qualifications in treating those with cancer, back problems, diabetes and obesity.

Four decades at the Castle Sports Centre came to an end recently where some of those she inspired personally thanked her.

“It was very emotional with lots of tears from lots of friends,” said Cheryl. “I shall miss them so much.”

It all started when the now 64-year-old started exercising after having three of her four children.

Previous to that she worked as an accounting clerk.

“When the instructor left, two of us were asked if we’d like to go ahead and take the classes.

“I quickly got on a training course for the qualifications and just realised how much I liked doing it.

“It took me back to how much I enjoyed sport at school.

“I think I left there not knowing what I wanted to do, but doing the classes made me realise this was it.”

Up to last week Cheryl was still taking 14 classes a week and recently came back from the annual ski trip she organises for gym members at the Castle Sports.

The Spalding resident who grew up in Pinchbeck also used to run ‘Saturday trips’.

“We’ve had some amazing time and I’ve met so many lovely people,” said Cheryl who has decided to retire early.

“All of my friends have been made through my work.”

All four of her children, three sons and one daughter, play rugby for Spalding, husband Phil is a referee and involved in the administration of the game and part of retirement will be spending time with her grandchildren.

“Retirement has to come at some point,” Cheryl said. “I’ve got a new house project coming up and I’d like to get back into the arts as I’m fairly artistic.

“We also like our holidays.”

The most recent ski trip Cheryl organised.
