Strong win for Lightning in mixed county comp

In a quieter week in competitive team matches for Spalding Lightning, the mixed county league team played Scunthorpe IBC at home and they collected a comprehensive win by 94 shots to 50 and gaining the maximum 14 points available.

The team won on all four rinks, with the top winning rink skipped by Anthony Cronin, with Christine Williamson, June Taylor and Rob West, who won 25-10.

This sees the mixed side go top of the Division One table with three matches still to play, eight points clear of Lincoln, who have a game in hand.

Their next match is at home against Boston IBC on Saturday, February 21.

Rink scores: Christine Williamson, June Taylor, Rob West and Anthony Cronin won 25-10; George Deaton, Maisie Belding, Betty Deaton and David Nunney won 22-9; Tony Westland, Sue Slayven, Maggie Wheatley and Graham Wright won 22-13; Jenny Wakefield, Ben Sharp, Carole Nunney and James Teesdale won 25-18.

  • After a heavy defeat last time away at Lincoln, the Spalding Lightning ladies’ Trudy Bates team looked to return to winning ways in a local derby versus Boston IBC.

In a close finish, they lost by one shot (72-73) and obtained just one rink and two points from the maximum 14 points available.

The home team were 15 shots up after five ends had been played across all rinks but as the game progressed, Spalding nibbled away at the deficit with the rink skipped by Louise Harris pulling back after a slow beginning and Maggie Wheatley’s rink often kept getting within two shots to get in front of their opposition.

This set up a final end shoot-out with Lightning needing three shots to grab the important six aggregate points but only getting one shot.

Their next match is away against Sleaford IBC on Friday, February 20.

Rink scores: Christine Williamson, Jenny Wakefield, Mandy Parkins and Julie Hicks won 21-10; Ann Newbury, Jackie Jackson, Carole Nunney and Louise Harris lost 20-21; Judy Jackson, Paula Lawson, Sue Slayven and Maggie Wheatley lost 13-16; Shelia Chamberlain, Gill Haydon, June Taylor and Maisie Belding lost 18-26.

  • The one quarter final of the under-18 county triples competition was played last Sunday at Boston IBC, and featured two of Spalding’s juniors facing off against each other.
Bella Hoyles, Thom Rodd and Spalding’s Max Butters played against Kelsie Fox, Spalding’s Oscar Butters (Max’s brother) and Charlie Nicholls.

The match was very close with Oscar and his team getting two shots on the final end to come out on top and claim bragging rights by 13 shots to 11.

They now move on to the semi finals to play Harry Allerton, Jack Hoyles and Chloe Bland. The other semi sees Lucy Allerton, Freddie Hoyles and Josh Durrands versus Spalding’s Jessica Butters, Freddie Knapp and Spalding’s Aidan Brickles.

These are to be played on Sunday, March 8 at Lincoln IBC alongside the other LIBA men’s and mixed county semi finals.

  • The under-18 inter-county match between the Lincolnshire Tigers team and Durham CIBA was conceded by Durham, therefore the Lincolnshire Tigers (featuring Spalding members Brickles and Max Butters) take the points and sit top of their area league table.

They face one more game to guarantee qualification for the national semi finals, this one against Yorkshire on Sunday, February 22 at Sleaford IBC.
