Spalding ladies swamped

Spalding Ladies 1st 1 Cambridge City 4th 9

Spalding faced brutal weather conditions as they crashed to a heavy defeat in Women’s East League Division One North.

Relentless rain turned the opening half into a gritty battle but, despite the rain, both sides fought fiercely with Spalding’s defence holding strong in the face of sustained pressure.

However, the opposition began to capitalise on a series of short corners, and scored three times.

Player of the match Honor Moore raised home hopes on the half-hour mark when she powered through the midfield. As she broke into the D, the goalkeeper charged out and wiped her out, earning Spalding a penalty flick. Moore picked herself up and slotted the ball home.

However that was only a brief respite as City stormed forward to score six more goals despite a brave display from goalkeeper Freya Lee.

A determined and spirited performance gained two goals for the ladies’ second team but it was not enough to earn any Division Three North West points.

The hosts took an early lead but a shuffle of positions saw Spalding hold firm, with no more goals before the break.

Cambridge capitalised on a few scrappy moments in the second half, scoring a flurry of messy goals to go 4-0 ahead.

They were awarded a penalty flick but Eliza Morris produced a superb save, only for the ball to cruelly rebound into the net.

Spalding dug deep and were eventually rewarded with two goals of their own.
