Tennis players served new fees

Users of the tennis courts in Spalding’s Ayscoughfee Gardens are set to be charged for the first time.

The courts, which reopened in September 2023 after a £120,000 facelift have been free to use, bar a small booking fee organised by the Lawn Tennis Association.

From Monday (November 3) it will be £3 to hire one of the four courts during off peak hours and £5 at peak hours.

Operators South Holland District Council say it is ‘to ensure the long-term sustainability of the courts and address instances of misuse and anti-social behaviour’.

“The introduction of booking fees is a necessary measure to meet the requirements of the funding we received,” said Coun Henry Bingham, the authority’s portfolio holder for assets and strategic planning.

“This step ensures the facility remains high-quality with continued investment to maintain its accessibility for all residents to enjoy for years to come.

“We are proud of the improvements made to the courts and are encouraged by the positive feedback from the community.”

The district council added that the sessions being free for the last two years ‘allowed the community ‘to reconnect with the sport’.

It also says free social tennis sessions will be available every weekend from Spring 2026 as part of the Barclays Free Park Tennis initiative.

“These one hour sessions will be open to all ages and abilities offering a fun, friendly way to stay active, meet new people and enjoy the game, no partner or experience required.

“South Holland District Council is encouraging residents to stay active and enjoy the high-quality tennis courts at Ayscoughfee Hall Gardens throughout the autumn and winter seasons.

“With professional-standard facilities and a scenic setting, there’s no need to pack away your racket when the temperature drops.”
