Warnings over area loan sharks

A rise in ‘loan shark’ activity in South Holland led to a conference being held recently to help community groups raise awareness of the scam.

Loan sharks are illegal moneylenders who often charge very high interest rates.

A number of groups came to Tonic Health’s hubs where community co-ordinators Jo Ireland and Vanessa Collings presented the session.

“Representatives from local customer facing organisations attended to gain awareness of what can be done when loan shark activity is suspected,” said Jo. “The morning session took place at Tonic Health in Spalding and then in the afternoon at The Holbeach Hub.

“Attendees included social prescribers, Framework support workers, Wellbeing Lincs, Holbeach Food Larder, Boxes of Hope and the SHDC Rough Sleeping Team.

“As community connectors we try to be as reactive as we can to situations that may arise, and then use our local connections to help where we can for the benefit of the community.”
