A centenarian took to the hockey pitch in full kit at the weekend as part of an inter-generational event.
Lorna Webb, who turned 100 earlier this year, took part in an event organised by Spalding Hockey Club, which brought the generations of players together for a set of triangular games at Glen Park, Surfleet on Saturday.
The club’s Walking Hockey Group entered two teams against the club’s Ladies’ 3rds and the Men’s 5th development teams.
It proved to be an excellent introduction to the new season for the club that prides itself on developing players in this modern, disciplined and family orientated sport.
The young men’s team, expertly guided by senior club member Andy Barlow, found it hard going in the early stages of their opening game against an experienced Walkers B team but gradually developed their passing game to effect.
They continued to develop and this paid off as they were impressive in beating the Walkers A team in their second game.
The ladies went down in their opening game to the Walkers A team but changed tactics to set up a close encounter against the Walkers B team in their second match.
In the closing stages and with the scores level, the Walkers introduced their new signing, hockey legend Webb, who took to the pitch took to the pitch fully kitted out in her Gosberton Clough Poachers kit that she last wore in her playing days several decades ago.
Webb was instrumental in forming the Gosberton Ladies’ Hockey Club (later to become the Gosberton Clough Poachers) in 1947 and captained the team for well over 20 years.
Following her retirement from playing, Webb played an influential part in hockey development and administration in Lincolnshire and England Hockey.
The club’s junior coaching sessions get under way on Saturday at Glen Park, Surfleet, PE11 4DB, from 9.15am to 10.45am.
The sessions are open to boys and girls aged five to 13 years.
Any youngsters interested in playing hockey are asked to contact the club via the website www.spaldinghockeyclub.co.uk and complete the ‘Join the Club’ section.
