Apology after Spalding town centre road is closed without notice

An electricity company has apologised for failing to give notice of a closure of a town centre road.

The first many Park Road residents were aware of the closure was when it was shut on Monday where National Grid are installing cables and also at the railway crossing.

The Meadows Day Care Centre, a local charity that provides day care sessions for seniors, is inbetween those and had to put out a message on social media asking people to ask those working on the road to remove the barriers at the northern end to reach it.

Its manager, Maisie Wenham, told The Voice that she’d received an apology from a National Grid staff member who told her that letters hadn’t been sent or signs put out as is supposed to happen.

“It’s been an absolute nightmare,” she said. “I feel very sorry for the people with homes around the area too as the work is so loud, and no one had any notice to prepare.”

A National Grid Electricity Distribution spokesperson issued an apology for signage not being put out.

They said: “Engineers are currently working on Park Road, Spalding, to install new underground electricity cables.

“This will reinforce the local electricity network and provide a more reliable and secure supply, while ensuring that our network is fit for the future as demand increases.

“We understand that road closures cause frustration for residents, motorists and local businesses, and thank them for their patience and understanding while we complete the project.

“We continue to work closely with Lincolnshire County Council to ensure the impact is minimised as much as possible.”

National Grid say the work is scheduled to finish by June 3, though Ms Wenham said the staff member she’d corresponded with had told her Cadent was also looking to carry out work there while the road is closed.

The Voice has approached Cadent for a comment.
