Haunch impresses but late goals kill Spalding’s hopes

Cambridge 1s 3
Spalding Men’s 1s 1
A slow start in wet and windy conditions saw Spalding fall a goal behind in their East League Division One North match. Spalding regrouped and played themselves back into the game, winning several penalty corners but were unable to convert any, despite finishing the half strongly and pinning Cambridge back.
A positive team talk and a half-time re-jig of playing formation saw Spalding play arguably their best hockey of the season so far. With the rain and wind continuing to lash down, pitch conditions became tough and the visitors needed some outstanding saves from man of the match Oscar Haunch to keep them in the match. With five minutes remaining a deflection from a penalty corner fell kindly for Cambridge to make it 2-0. Spalding went up the other end from the re-start and won their own penalty corner, which Stu Cunnington finished with his reverse.
With minutes remaining Spalding threw everything at Cambridge but got caught in the last few seconds to conceded a third.
