Police use HGVs for patrols

Lincolnshire police took to the roads in an HGV last week to get a different view of drivers.
Operation Tramline saw 124 vehicles stopped and a total of 141 offences reported.
One man in his 40s, who was stopped for carrying an abnormal load, was also arrested on suspicion of drink and drug driving. He has been released under investigation.
The unmarked HGV was loaned by National Highways and ‘provides an ideal vantage point for officers to keep an eye on driver behaviour.’
Offences spotted included 51 not wearing seatbelts, 23 on a mobile phone, 20 related to vehicle condition and seven drivers with no insurance.
Two stolen vehicles were also recovered and ten abnormal loads offences and a total of 109 Traffic Offence Reports issued.
“Making our roads safer for all road users is the aim of our roads policing officers and Operation Tramline is just one of the many road safety awareness schemes that we run through the year,” said Insp Jason Baxter.
“It’s about raising awareness and education motorists that their actions can have devastating consequences.”
National Highways assistant regional safety co-ordinator Marie Biddulph said: “Working with our police partners we want to make people think again about their driving behaviour.”
