LETTERS – Don’t lose any more staff

I have just returned from doing my weekly shop at Tesco, having been a customer since they arrived in Holbeach some 20 years ago.
Despite a limited range of products, I have been happy to purchase my day-to-day requirements from them.
Without doubt, their greatest asset has been their floor staff, particularly those on the tills and customer service.
I regularly observe customers having a chat and few minutes’ banter with the cashier as they pack their groceries, and for many I suspect it may be the only opportunity they have to communicate with another person that day.
I was therefore extremely concerned to hear rumour of the current system being replaced by further self service tills, making the current number of till operators dispensable. I sincerely hope this is not the case.
Those of us that follow the stock market will know that Tesco are doing well, they are now Britain’s biggest supermarket chain.
This week the papers tell us that the shares are up by 2.8 per cent.
They are not struggling, so a little consideration for their retired clients would not go amiss.
I hope the above is in fact a ‘rumour.’ I’m holding my breath.
