It’s been a brilliant centenary year for Spalding Rugby Club, and to end it a book detailing its history has been released.
Spalding Rugby Football Club – A History of the First Hundred Years, has been written by former chairman John Constable and local historian Rex Sly.
The book has been two years in the making.
“You’re only going to be 100 once so it makes sense to record the history of the club so far now,” Constable said.
“It was formed not long after World War One and was brought back after World War Two after so many members went to fight.
“The club was based at St Paul’s School but the Coronation Channel went right through the centre of it when it was built.
“Spalding Grammar School was great in providing us somewhere to play and we were there for around 50 years.
“Now we have the new ground and it’s an exciting new era for the club.”
Constable says the club’s glory days were in the 60s when they went an entire season without losing, and in the 90s/early 2000s.
“At Spalding we’ve always been about going out playing and enjoying yourselves, then socialising after.
“We’ve teams now all the way from the under 6s to the veterans team, as well as the ladies’ section, so there’s something for the whole community.”
